WIP ~ Sept. 28th, 2011

Hey there ~

This has to be my favorite post to create each week.  I love the Work In Progress party at Freshly Pieced, and this has been such a motivator to keep track and get stuff done.  As a master procrastinator I tend to push off until it can’t be pushed anymore.  But since I want to be able to create a WIP post, I have show ‘some’ progress.  Thank you again Lee for hosting such a wonderful link party, and the time you put into doing it each week.

This week I can report that I am making great strides with the Sugar Pop HSTs top. I basted it this weekend by spray basting, and now have the center zig-zags and gray border quilted. I am going to continue the zig-zag lines into the outer border and connect the lines to make diamonds. I think that will help keep the scale of the quilt in line with the quilt, and add another great moment for this quilt.

This weekend I also got started on my snowball table runner using Ready, Set, Snow charms from Moda and some Kona Solids White.  I made a good start, but have probably half the charm pack to still make into these blocks.  I am using 2″ squares of the white.  It kinda takes away from the ‘snowball’ fell, but I am hoping once they are pieced together with the white sashing they will fell more like traditional snowballs.  When I started I liked the look of the 2″ squares for the corners over the 1.5″ squares.  Now I kind wish I had stuck with the 1.5″.  Maybe I will do some of both.  I have plenty of 1.5″ squares already cut.

Do you think it would look weird to have both sizes in the table runner?

No project to report on the other quilts.  But…

I added a fun set of pennants to the Girls’ Room, and received fabric orders for two top secret projects!  Yay!

Current Quilting Projects Update

Farmer’s Wife Quilt Along ~ 21 blocks completed… need 36 = 15 more to go!

Fabric purchased from Shabby Fabrics with the giftcard I won through Amy’s {A Diary of a Quilter} giveaway.  Thank you both for the giveaway!

The dark brown print is going to be my sashing fabric, and the light calico is going to be a wide border.  The dark brown print has a little bit of pinky rose coloring in those little light widgets that really ties into the scrappy quilt blocks.

Here is the layout I am currently thinking of for a 60″ by 60″ lap quilt size using 36 Farmer’s Wife Sampler Blocks.  I may still play with setting the blocks ‘on-point’, but am not sure that I want to try that skill at this point in time.

{PS ~ those are just blocks from Quilt Wizard not the actual block designs}

Lovely’ Quilt for Me ~ No progress, have the next block laid out and organized for sewing though.

Sugar Pop HSTs ~ finalized the layout of the blocks, and have pairs pinned together along the block sides that need to be sewn together.  Hopefully that will help ensure that next time I spend time on the HSTs I will sew the right blocks together on the correct side, LOL!

Ms. V’s Fresh Flowers Quilt ~ still considering multiple quilt patterns for this one.  Until I actually start on it I am not sure what pattern I will be using.  Right now I am leaning towards a dissapearing nine-patch with a border on two sides of each block.  Only God knows for sure what her quilt will look like, LOL.

Ready, Set, Snow Table Runner ~no progress… haven’t even looked at the blocks lately

New Projects ~

Advent Tree Wall Quilt ~ I have layed it out in Quilt Wizard tentatively.  Also, have 5 of the needed 25 yo-yos created from scraps.

Top Secret Christmas Quilt ~ fabric ordered.  I even made sure not to order any extra fabric for any other ‘use’.

Farmer’s Wife Pony Club Quilt ~ My book arrived!!!!  I have been reading through the letters.  Want to get my 36 FWQAL blocks finished before starting on this sampler quilt.  I am also working on details for the quilt-along I will be hosting for this book starting in November.

Charity Quilt ~ I really wanted to create a quilt for the Victims of the Bastrop Wildfires.  Here is the post with details on the Jelly Roll ‘Race’ quilt top I created Tuesday.  I want to get this basted and start on the quilting before this weekend, and hopefully spend time quilting it over the weekend.

I am linking up with WIP over at Freshly Pieced.

Farmer’s Wife Sampler Blocks;

2. Autumn Tints

A little shy on the one side, but the corners all seem to meet up, LOL!

Fabrics: collection of scraps, and large squares are a green fabric from another quilter.  Block 16/111

5. Bat Wings

Another block I love.  High contrast with a fun graphic feel.

Fabrics: Brown is a Fat 1/4 from Joann’s, blue is from another quilter.  Block 14/111

6. Big Dipper

This was a fun block to piece together.  It was very helpful to have made the mistakes I made last week with matching up pieces.  This time I made sure I was sewing the correct sides together the first time.

Fabrics: Joann’s for the horseshoe print {scraps from Mr. SD’s TV quilt}, and the dark paisley print is from another quilter.  Block 15/111.

9. Box

Took a while to decided on blue on blue, and I am very happy with how it turned out this way.

Fabrics: both blues are from the same quilter as the green in Block 2.  Block 17 of 111.

108. Windmill

My new favorite.  I wish I could make a whole quilt out of these fabrics.  I wasn’t sure about the purple while I was cutting pieces, but I adore the finished look.

Fabrics: Green and Rose Print from Joann’s ages ago, purple cross hatch from Connecting Threads.  Block 18/111

While I have not been making much any progress on my other WIPs, I am very happy with how my Farmer’s Wife Quilt-Along blocks are coming.  I am envisioning a dark brown sashing that has some pattern to it.  Maybe like the green leafy fabric I used in block 108.  A chocolate brown would really set all of these blocks beautifully.

What have you been working on this week?

Here are my Farmer’s Wife Quilt blocks for this week;

46. Hill and Valley ~ I can totally see using this one block to create an entire quilt of ‘stars’, with this block surrounding a center block.  Not a huge fan of these fabrics, but they do work with my overall color scheme.

56. Maple Leaf ~ What a fun block!  This one went together much easier than I had thought it would.  Maybe know I will have the confidence to make a fall table runner with ‘leaves’ in different colors.

And my epic failure of this week… {a definite redo is in the future for this block}

Here is the redone block ~

Not perfect, but definilty better than my first attempt, LOL!

My mail-man brought these two cute Micheal Miller fabrics for a custom order I am doing for a customer:

These are going to make supr-cute Stay-Put Towels!

In other news…

I have some Sugar Pop fabric coming to help me decide on a final layout of my HSTs quilt-top.  Hopefully I will have a couple options to post shortly for help making the ‘final’ layout decision.

I got bitten… Quilting Progress Report

It’s official… I got bitten by the Farmer’s Wife Sampler Quilt-A-Long bug.

From what I have heard, it isn’t fatal to me, just my stash and leftover scraps.  On the plus side… I decided that I will be grown up and add the many gorgeous sampler quilt projects currently in full swing here in blogland {see my right sidebar} on the to-do list.  It pains me to say this, but… I just don’t have time to make every quilt I want to.  Darn, it anyway.

There I said it, and my world didn’t end, LOL!  I realized this weekend that since I have gotten ‘back’ into quilting, I have done hardly any sewing of items for my Etsy shop and to stock up for the Christmas season craft fairs.  Can you believe that it is less than four months till Thanksgiving, and less than five till Christmas?!?!?

Here are a few of the Stay-Put Towels I just finished.  The two brown fabrics are for a special order, and the daisies on the aqua background will be available in the Spunky Diva Shop later this week.

And here are the FWQAL blocks that I finished this week…

The new trick I learned this week was: to use the printer’s scanner to import a ‘picture’ of each block to the computer.  It is ‘sew’ great!!  Each image is in focus, and the block are pressed flat by the lid of the scanner.  It was much easier than trying to take a photo of each block.  There are more details for each block on Flickr for The Spunky Diva.

Officially finished = quilted, washed and in use!

Ms. E’s Fresh Flowers quilt.

I used embroidery floss I had on-hand to tie this quilt.  I had plans to do some machine quilting, and then decided finishing was more important.  214 knots later… Ms. E is in L-O-V-E!

This quilt has already gone through the wash several times since she is carrying it around the house with her.  Amazingly the knots have stayed in.  I was really unsure if they would or ‘knot’.  It is very neat that they are staying in so well.

Quilt Stats:

Name: Ms. E’s Fresh Flowers Brick Quilt

Made For: Ms. E, formerly known as Ms. Diva

Fabric: Fresh Flowers by Deb Strain for Moda; backing was a Moda Print from LQS; Yellow Ruffle, premade ‘ribbon’ from Hobby Lobby sold by the yard; Orange End Ruffle, material off bolt at Hobby Lobby, pinned and sewn.

Batting: Warm and Natural off the Bolt

Size: 34” by 40” or ‘sew’

Quilting: Hand tied with embroidery floss

Dates: Start: Jan 2011; Finished: June 2011

Pattern: by Kimberlee

~ Works In Progress ~

Postage Stamp Quilt; on hold and fabrics being used now for the Rockin Robin Quilt Along.

Rockin Robin Quilt Along; fabrics choosen {see Postage Stamp Quilt link above}

Sugar Pop HSTs; 40 charms pieced with gray, cut, and ready to press and trim.

‘Lovely’ Quilt for me; 2 of 12 cabin blocks done, next cabin block laid out and ready to sew.

Ms. V’s Fresh Flowers Quilt; have plan, next step… start cutting.

This is going to be a quilt as I go project.  So I need to cut 15 squares of batting, backing and top fabric to get this quilt started.

Skill Builder Quilt Along; selected fabrics, need to piece together the first three blocks.

This is going to be a fun Christmas quilt, for ‘I’m don’t know yet’ {LOL!}

Summer Sampler Series; picked fabrics to get started with, but will be adding more to balance out the ‘values’; waiting for first post on the 11th {not behind on this one… yet} ~ This will be donated as part of the 100 Quilts for Kids campaign.

Ready, Set, Snow Snowball Tablerunner; have a plan, need to start piecing

Puppy Quilt; still need to baste and quilt

Fresh Flowers Liberated Wedding Rings Tablerunner; quilted, need to get the iron out and get the binding completed.

And that should wrap up my WIP update.  I was hoping to make more progress on this list over the weekend, but I got several Kitchen Valances completed for Mom instead.  Since these had been on the back burner for a while, it feels really good to have these off my plate.  Thank you Lord for my serger!!!  It certainly makes creating curtains ‘sew’ much faster.

A ‘Lovely’ quilt for me.

Just what I needed… another project, but…

I got a charm pack of Moda’s Lovely and fell in love.  I had been reading about the Naked Bed Challenge, and unfortunately it applies to me.  My bed suffers the shame of being covered by a store-bought fluffy comforter.  No illusions of a handmade quilt has ever even touched my bed, until now.

As much as I love tons of different fabrics, I have found it extremely hard to find a fabric line I wanted to use for a bed quilt.  So I figured I would just keep the Naked Bed challenge in the back of my head for later {another project for the ‘To-Do List’}.  But of course now that I am working to finish up projects, and have fabrics for several quilts, I found the perfect fabric and have added another quilt {a queen-size one at that} to my list.  Here are some fabric shots.  It even already has a name; Charming Jelly Cabins.

I have the jelly roll strips and charms sorted and stacked to create the log cabin blocks.  I can’t wait to start, but need to knock out a couple other small sewing projects before starting on this… like Mr. SD’s work shirts.  Can you believe he found more for me to put his name patches on?

Also over the weekend I completed a quick baby quilt {details here} for a baby shower at church on Sunday.  Can’t believe it, but I got the whole thing done in about 6 hours including breaks to play with Miss ‘V’.
