5QF ~ Sept. 9th, 2011

Fire Update: The Bastrop Wildfires continue to move away from us {Thank you Lord}, and we are continuing to collect donations {clothing, household items, toiletry items} and taking them directly to the Bastrop collection/distribution center.  It is amazing to see the sheer number of vechiles of those volunteering and displaced by the fires.

HEB, a local grocery chain, has been amazing in their generosity of items and food for the volunteers/firefighters, and displaced.  However, this does mean that our HEB in Elgin has several completly unstocked aisles and Mr. SD is out of his Breathright Strips.  Oops.

Moda/United Notions is organizing a pillowcase drive.  And I will post more info on a current quilt drive once I track down the links for that one.

This post about the Bastrop Wildfires has more info and links on how you can help the victims of this disaster.

While they don’t know yet what caused this/these massive fires they suspect a cigarette is most likely to blame.  If you smoke… please, please, please keep your butts in the car.

1. What ringtone do you have on your cell phone?

Just a standard one.  I have put special ones created from songs before, but I tend to not here those.  So I use an obnoxious one that no one can miss.  Makes me a favorite at church if I forget to turn it off, LOL!

2. What is your favorite memory from this summer?

Ms. E and Ms. V interacting.  I was worried {what parent isn’t?} that with kiddo no. 2 that kiddo no. 1 would have issues with said no. 2.

But, Ms. E just adores her younger sister.  Ms. V tries so hard to keep up with her.  I can see lots of fun coming over the next years.

3. Paper books or eBooks?

My preference is paper, but that is changing to eBooks because they are so darn convenient.  Just hope on the Internet, find what you want, download {maybe even for free}, and start reading.

Don’t have to drive to the store, find they don’t have what you want, go about a few more errands, ‘wander’ over to the next book store, etc.

Much more convenient.  Not sure that I like the convenience though.  I think that there are a lot of ways we are forgetting how to do things the hard way, or the more time consuming way.  Easy is as easy does.

4. If you could have one home upgrade what would it be and why?

Dishwasher.  Why?  Because we don’t currently have one at all! We have an ‘effeciency’ kitchen.  Which would be fine.  Except we now have two small kiddos {three when Big Bro visits}, and Mr. SD likes to cook.

Which means I end up doing lots of dishes… by hand…

5.  When was your first serious boyfriend/girlfriend?

My 20′s.  I spent my teenage ‘boy crazy’ years staying crazy about horses.  And horses take up lots of time.  I think my parents were happy to have that sport/obsession continue through my teenage years, LOL!

Have a safe weekend.  We are celebrating Mr. SD’s mom’s b-day this weekend, and I can’t wait to catch up with a ‘surprise’ out of town visiter.

Kimberlee, Thank you for visiting!

Five Question Fridays at My Little Life

Friday Fragments at Half Past Kissin Time

5QF ~ Aug. 26th, 2011

Welcome to the last Friday of August 2011.

Welcome to the 71st day of 100+ degree weather in Central Texas.

This heat has been crazy.  No rain and crazy hot.  Our 33 acres of hay fields have no hay.  We haven’t seen the hay grow more than an inch or two all year.  I did find some really nice, horse quality hay to buy up in Waco.  The hay itself is from Missouri.  Haven’t started feeding it yet, as we have one more round bale from our hay crop last year still to feed.

Definition of crazy: living on 33 acres of hay fields and having to buy hay for the horses that comes all the way from Missouri.  That is crazy.

Ms. V {the youngest terror} is now crawling like crazy, has two bottom front teeth, and is pulling herself up to stand on everything {stable or not, LOL}.  Her favorite chew toy is my shoes.  Yuck!  Both of my kiddos have chewed on more of my shoes than any puppy I have raised.  Double yuck!!

Ms. E {the older, more experienced terror} has decided that being at least four feet of the ground should be the norm at all times.  We have found her on the changing table, on top of the bookcase {which is why you anchor them to the wall}, and on the back of the couch.  Needless to say… Ms. E is currently not allowed out of eyesight, and not left in any room by herself right now.

She has also decided after the blue toes experience that she would like to be a toe nail polisher…

Five Question Friday ~

1) Did you make any fun purchases this week?

I bought diapers.  Does that count?

2) If you could go to any musical concert, what would it be?

The Fresh Beat Band ~ Ms. E would get such a kick out of it, that it would be worth it.  Plus if everyone in the crowd is below 3′, I could see the stage, LOL!

3) What is your least fav/most fav house chore?

Cooking is my least fav.  I hate trying to figure out recipes, but don’t mind baking deserts.

My most fav is when all the chores are done, and I can get some sewing or reading in.

4) Would you prefer new appliances or clothes?

I would love new appliances.  I have been drooling over those super, cool washer/dryers that are front loading, have a steam cycle, and make PB&J for you too.

5) Miracle Whip or Mayo? This question makes me laugh.  I grew up in a mayo only household.  Mr. SD is a Miracle Whip only kinda guy.  So, I get caught in the middle between Mr. SD and my mom on which is best.  I will say that on a sandwich I prefer Mayo.  If it is in something {i.e. chicken salad or egg salad} I don’t notice it enough to prefer one over the other, and tend to use what I have in the refrigerator.

Now if we were talking Peanut Butter, I would have to say Smooth and Creamy is the way to go.  Definitely.

Have a fantastic weekend!

Kimberlee, Thank you for visiting!

Friday Fragments at Half Past Kissin Time

Five Question Friday ~ July 29th, 2011

Here we are at the last Friday of July…

… Christmas is only 148 days away {less than 5 months!}

But who’s counting????

I am!  I have several hand-made items to make still.  This weekend I am planing on figuring out my plan of attack.  Mainly figuring out which ones I will most likely get done, and which ones need to go on the back burner for next years b-days.

So that is my plan for the weekend, that and getting started on my Farmer’s Wife Quilt.

I posted pictures of Ms. E’s and my blue toes from our pedicures last week here.  Ms. E is still ‘finding’ her toes.  It is sooooo stinking cute!

Now onto Five Question Friday with My Little Life;

1) Vow renewal ceremonies – yay or nay?

I think they can be a beautiful thing.  Depending on the couple and the trials they have faced the ceremony can help add strength and reaffirmation to their relationship.

Now… will Mr. SD and I renew our vows?  I don’t think so, but we also don’t know what the future holds.

2) What sound(s) annoy you the most?

Whining!  That one is at the top of my list.  I don’t care if you are a kiddo or an adult.  I don’t want to hear your whining.  I something is bothering you that you feel the need to mention it more than twice…. change something.

That has to be my biggest pet peeve.  Not that I am ever guilty of whining, but I sincerely try not to inflict my complaints on others…. to often.

3) If you had to pick, would you have only all boys all girls for kids?

Well… at this point we are an all girl team.  I don’t know that I would pick one over the other.  But I have to say I love my girls.  The neat thing about having all one or the other is that the hand me downs work all the way down the line.  No little boys wearing the ‘least girly’ clothes, or vs versa.

4) Do you believe in alternative medicine?

The question should be… do you believe in modern medicine?  I think to many people go to the doctor for little stuff, and end up over medicated.  Then there are times I completely love modern medicine… hello! I have two c-sections. Thank you Lord for modern medicine and great pain meds.

Alternative medicines can help a lot, because many ‘alternatives’ lead you to live a healthier life style.  I have been checking out Crunchy Betty, and have been finding many ‘easy’ ways to lead a greener, toxic-free life.  Very interesting stuff to read.

My first step to greenness is using vinegar and essential oils in the dryer instead of dryer sheets or fabric softener.  I will report back in a week with my findings.

5) Would you take a family member’s children and raise them if they needed it?

Yes.

That is what families are for, and I don’t care what the reason is the children need care.  Whether their parent(s) are dead, unable to care for them (mental illness or prison).  Children are meant to be protected, not sent off to a foster home.

Nothing against foster homes here, I think the people that offer their homes {and a lot of time their hearts} are amazing people.  But… just like the welfare system… it should be used by those that have no other options.  Families should support their own.  In my ‘humble’ opinion.

However, it is hard in today’s streached out society to always be there to lend a hand.  With families spread from one end of this country to the other, sometimes there is no one there to lend that much needed hand.  I am very thankful to have my family close and available.  It makes it so much easier to lend them a hand and for them to lend a hand as well.

What are your thoughts on these questions/answers?  Want to join the fun?  Head over to My Little Life and link-up your thoughts and ideas on these ‘world-changing’ topics.

5QF ~ July 22nd, 2011

Hip, Hip, Hooray it’s FRIDAY!

Ms. E and I got pedis and haircuts yesterday night {check back on Scrappy Sunday for pictures}.  Ms. E had fun picking out scads of different nail polishes, but the one that went on the toes {both hers and mine} is this fun blue/aqua color.  Nice and summery!

I was informed that my Knotty Flip-Flops were not so great for pedis, since the fabric had all kinds of stray dog hairs {say it isn’t so!} and other fuzzy lint.  Either way I have very ‘fresh’ feet and toes, and my hair feels much smoother.  Amazing what having a haircut after 5 7 months will do for your split ends, LOL!

Onto Five Question Friday {hosted by My Little Life…}

1) If your husband had the BIG V and you got pregnant what would your first reaction be?  Honestly?  What the @#$%!  I mean… seriously, if you dealt with him having ‘the operation’ {kinda like ‘the pill’} it means you were serious about not ‘planning’ on having more kiddos wandering around.

2) Best memory about this summer so far?  Ms. E and Ms. V.  There will never be another summer like this one.

Ms. V loves to ‘walk’ around the house, and Ms. E being the ultra-helpful older sister has to ‘help’ with these walks by holding a hand.  Luckily… Ms. E feels that holding my hand is okay, and doesn’t try to actually hold Ms. V’s hand.  It sure makes a sight to see the three of us parading around the house like this.

Ms. V does the baby big-step, and Ms. E marches right along with over large steps to match little sis’.  It is so friggin cute!  Definitly need to get this memory on tape before it disappears forever.

The other awesome memory is how much Ms. E has grown as a confidant swimmer {with her new floaty}.  She loves the water and trucking around the pool.  Ms. V just lounges around in her ‘lounge chair’ and sunglasses.

Do we have time for one more favorite memory?

It has been so much fun to have Big Bro here.  He and the girls have been having lots of fun, and it is fun to see the love a little sister can have for her Big Bro.

3) How often do you change your sheets?  Your kids’ sheets?  My sheets get changed every Saturday.  I love fresh sheets, so that is a big one with me.  If it is a crazy Saturday, I may skip a week, depending on how much other laundry there is.  Maybe…

Ms. E’s sheets get changed a couple times a week, because she wets through her diaper.  Ms. V’s get changed on Saturday’s like ours.

4) Having just gone through TSA, would you rather have a full-body scan or a pat-down?  How about I skip the flying, and I don’t have to choose?

I honestly don’t know what/how I feel about this, and am glad I don’t have any flying planned in the near or far future at this point.

5) Since it is fair time…what’s your favorite fair memory?  I have a couple… is that a surprise, LOL?

As a teenager; it was doing well enough with my 4-H presentation at the county level to get to do it at the State level.  Which included fair tickets.  So our whole family went for a day at the fair.  People stopped to listen to me, and it was a ‘horrifying’ experience, but we got to enjoy the fair afterwards.

My other favorite memory, was listening the radio and hearing that there were still Brooks & Dunn tickets available for that nights show.  Got the ok from my mom, and drove on down to the fair.  Got a great seat {always easier when it is just one person}, and then enjoyed the fair until the show started.  And it was an Awesome show.  I think that is one of my favorites just because it was a time when I did something I wanted rather than hemming and hawing until the opportunity passed me by.

Kimberlee, Thank you for visiting!

Some more Friday Fun ~ 7/1/2011

Friday Fill-Ins from Janet {6/24 questions}

1. Getting away with murder.

Ms. E is now 20 months, and she definitely is trying to murder the kitty.  Despite her attempts on his life, ‘Boots’, still thinks she is the best thing ever, and keeps coming back for more.  Ms. E is getting better about not holding him around the neck, but… it is still a close call sometimes.

2. Definitely need coffee to start your day off right.

Does this one need any further explanation?  Coffee to start the day, and a nice relaxing cup of tea after the kiddos go to bed.

3. Coffee, tea or ????. I would say water, but I am not sure if that really goes there or not.

4. I use honey in place of sugar.  It’s ‘supposed’ to be healthier.  Not sure if it truly is or not, but it makes me feel better.

5. “The lights from the  Ferris wheel look like fireflies from a distance.  Dancing through the night.”  Line from Disaster Status by Candace Calvert {my current book}

6. Being a child is all about happiness.

Ms. E and Ms. V are constantly reminding me of what happiness truly is.  They have so much wonder in how they view the world around them.

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I’m looking forward to Mr. SD and I are going to a fancy, schmancy place to eat dinner for our anniversary, tomorrow my plans include sleeping in {thank you mom for keeping the kiddos at your house} sewing in my newly rearranged and cleaned sewing space and Sunday, I want to sew some more!  And Monday… I want to sleep in!  Hooray for a three day weekend.

Five Question Friday from My Little Life

1)  If you had the opportunity to bungee jump, would you?

Nope.  Had the opportunity to in Africa, and there wasn’t a chance in you-know-where that I was going to take that offer up, LOL!

2) Would you rather go to the movie theater or to the drive-in?

Movie theater.  I like my ac, and here in Texas it would be rather warm to watch a movie with the car windows down.

3) Do you have your groceries delivered?

They deliver groceries???  That would be really neat.  But how do they pick out the produce?  I tend to be really picky about my fruits and veggies.

4) Eyebrows; Do you wax, thread, pluck, or stay ‘au natural’?

I love the look of having waxed eyebrows.  But… I can’t remember the last time I got them waxed.  The ‘au natural’ look is what this mommy tends to sport.

5) Would the people you went to high school with be surprised by your life today?

Honestly?  I am not sure.  I am surprised where my life is today.  I am incredibly happy where I am, but never in a million years would have thought that being a mommy and not activly pursuing a career in horses would give me the happiness I have today.

Here are the first 2 of 12 blocks for my ‘Lovely’ quilt.  This is one of the proejcts I want to work on this weekend.

I hope you have a fantastic holiday weekend, and if you can do fireworks {can’t here because of the draught} please remember “Safety First”.  Emergency rooms are no fun on holidays.  Trust me, I know, LOL!

Friday Fun with Photos ~ 6/24/2011

Before we get to the Friday Fun I wanted to make sure you know about SwagBucks.  I am sure most of you have heard of them, since they are very popular, but do you know what/how they work?  Swagbucks.com is a search page that pulls results from Google and Yahoo when you ‘ask’ a question {search the web}.  Because of the amount of advertising on the site {all easily avoidable in my opinion} they offer you Swagbucks that you can trade in for prizes.

You receive Swagbucks sporadically during the day for your searches.  Sometimes earning 7 SBs, sometimes 11SBs or even more.  If you make Swagbucks your home screen, it makes it very quick and easy to run your web searches through them.

My favorite prize is the $5 Amazon Giftcards.  I have gotten six since Jan of this year, that is $30 of money from running searches I would normally run through Google!  I also traded in Swagbucks for a $15 iTunes gift card, making the total ‘money’ I have received from Swagbucks {again just for this year} to be $45!

In addition to running your searches through Swagbucks, you can earn 4 Swagbucks everyday quickly and easily.  Here is how;

4 SBs everyday for a 30 day month {say June} equals 120 SBs.  Add to those the SBs you are earning from your daily searches and you may earn 450 SBs a month!  450 SBs is the number you need to trade in for the $5 Amazon Giftcard.  I highly recommend Swagbucks to everyone!

We all search the web… why not get ‘money’ for doing it?

And… off my soapbox and onto Five Question Friday from My Little Life;

1. What is your current favorite tv show? Okay… this is the question I suggested, and though I do have a favorite show right now, So You Think You Can Dance, I HAVEN”T GOTTEN TO WATCH IT!!!!

I have watched up through the audtions, skipped Las Vegas week {still on the DVR so I can go back and watch those episodes}, and we are now in the process of watching the Top 20 Selection episode.  UGH!  I am having major withdrawels.  I guess it is to be expected with the two little ‘Divas’ though.  And I wouldn’t trade them for anything.  Ms. Diva isn’t quite sure what to make of SYTYCD yet, LOL!  She is so busy watching, she hasn’t figured out if she can dance at the same time or not.

2. What’s the worst haircut you ever got? My mom got me an afro.  Think pre-teen with super curly hair and a mullet.  What do you think that looked like???
And no, I am not posting any pictures from that part of my life.

3. What was something that you did as a child that you thought you were so cool for doing? Definitly not the mullet/fro thing.  I don’t know that I did anything really ‘cool’ as a kid.  I always seemed to be the misfit.  If I tried to do something ‘cool’ it usually backfired on me.  So I stuck with my horses.

I don’t know that I thought I was cool for the horses, but definitly good at it.  I am pretty sure that I thought I was better at it than I actually was until about 12, when I got my first horse {after having ponies} and found out how much I didn’t know, LOL!  Talk about a lesson in humilty.

4. Do you have any GREAT frugal family fun tips? If I did, we wouldn’t be working on the debt thing, LOL!

My biggest tip is the Dave Ramsey quote: Life like no one else now, so You can live like no one else later.

Don’t get caught up in having the latest clothes, daily coffee from the coffee shop, fast food that isn’t good for you anyways.  That kind of stuff.

But… don’t ask me about fabric and sewing stuff.  That is trully my downfall in the frugality area.  I just try to make up for it by getting stuff using my Swagbucks {see above}.

5. Would you drive across country if you had the money to fly? Yes.  No better way to see the countryside.  If I had the time.  I can’t wait to take the girls camping, and that normally envolves a road trip.

Friday Fill-Ins from Janet; arn’t up yet.  I will add them later once they are up.  Here are a few fun pictures of Ms. Diva Playing with her new magnetic numbers from Hoohobber’s.

Have a great Friday and a super-duper weekend!

Kimberlee, Thank you for visiting!

Friday Fun ~ June 9th, 2011

Baby Diva is just one week shy of being 5 months old.   Where does the time go???  We moved her into the crib, and she is now sleeping in the same room with Ms. Diva.  Which makes bedtime very entertaining with Ms. Diva wanting to pop up and check on the ‘baby’.  Ms. Diva is such a good big sister.

I can’t wait to hang out with my Aunt M!!!  She is visiting from home {the Seattle area}.  Maybe she will bring some rain with her?  I can hope… I think we might soon wither and blow away around here.  Yikes.  We got the pool set up so she can really enjoy the hot weather with some pool time in the sun.  Ms. Diva helped scrub the algae off the bottom, and off of Big Bro’s legs, LOL.  Mom didn’t have a camera, but apparently Ms. Diva was a site to behold before her bath.  Now the pool is full of fresh, clean water.  Baby Diva shrieked when they dunked her toes, and Ms. Diva wanted to have her ducks all in a row just like last summer. {pool pics from last summer}

Friday Fill-Ins by Janet

1. I remember when I first heard um, um, um… .

2. “Rain is showering down from above.”  Boy, do I wish that were true.  We are in desperate need of rain in Central Texas.  The crops are failing due to lack of moisture, and our hay fields look like it is the middle of winter.

3. Most humans are just trying to make their way through this world.  A few are making their mark, and others are just out for what they can get.

4. _____…sound familiar? Eek.  I am not doing very well at these this week.  Most of these I am just drawing a complete blank on.

5. I was inspired by these amazing quilts.

6. Nobody who knows where!

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I’m looking forward to playing with the fabric I got in for my attempt at a Stamp Quilt variation, tomorrow my plans include hanging out with my aunt visiting from the Seattle area, and Sunday, I want to hang out some more and maybe get some shopping in!

Five Question Friday at My Little Life with Mama M.

1. How close to your childhood dreams is your life now?
My is totally different than my childhood dreams.  As a child I dreamed of being a horse trainer ‘god’, going to the Olympics, not having any ‘yucky’ diapers to change, etc.
I am so glad my life is different than I imagined.  My babies are such a neat blessing!  I love horses, but… it takes an awful lot of work, money, and time to be successful at it.  And, you never know when you may be physically hurt doing a sport you love.  All in all I think my current life is much better than the one I imagined.
2. What is one must have item for the summer?
A pool, capris, good flip flops, even better pedicure, a POOL!
Can you tell I am happy our pool is ready for swimming?  As hot as it has been, I can’t wait to hop in and cool off.
3. Do you have your kids stay up on school stuff during summer vacation? (Or, if you don’t have kiddos, did your parents make you keep up on school stuff during summer?)
My kiddos are to young to worry about school stuff.  I didn’t have to stay up on school stuff during the summer, but… I was a total geek and probably read more books in the summer than during school.  My stepson does have to work on his reading while he is with us over the summer, but he isn’t all that keen on picking up a book just for the heck of it.
4. Do you can or freeze fresh produce?
Haven’t done either.  We haven’t done any gardening this year, except for my flowers.  It has been so hot, and with the new baby {Baby Diva} and with how poorly we did at keeping up the garden last year… we just decided to skip it this year.
5. Do you get ready for the day first thing in the morning? Nope.  I get on the computer and/or do some sewing first thing.  Drink my coffee breakfast drink.  Fed Baby Diva now that she getting baby cereal in the morning.  Take them to Grandma’s.  Go feed the horses.  Then I take a shower and get dressed for the day.

The above is just in case you missed that fact, LOL!  Enjoy your weekend and stay safe!
