Quilt for Baby “R”

We had a baby shower this past Sunday for a new mom at our church.  They are having a baby girl, and are going with a classic Winnie-the-Pooh theme.  I had this lovely Moda Seaside Rose by 3 Sisters fabric that I thought would be a good match without being specifically Winnie-the-Pooh.

The pattern is from Berkshire Quilts, and was very quick to cut and piece.  I can’t wait to make another lap quilt with prints. You know those fabrics you can’t bear to cut into small pieces.  This is a perfect pattern to use those for.

I did have issues with the quilting.  Being in Texas I just used minkee {purchased with a 40% coupon at Joann’s} with no batting, but for some reason the top and bottom fabrics went through the feed dogs at different rates despite using a walking foot.  I think if I had used more pins it would have helped.

Even with ironing the creases in the fabric did not go away.  They did come out when the quilt went through the washer and dryer.  Remember when using minkee fabrics to let those receiving the quilt to not dry on high.  The fibers used to create minkee can melt if dried on a high heat setting, and that can/will ruin the quilt.

I used five Fat Quarters and was able to create scrappy binding to match the quilt out of the leftovers from those five Fat Quarters.  All in all, I am very happy with how the quilt turned out, even though it was definitely not perfect I did learn from it, and hope to be able to get that much closer to perfection on the next quilt.
